Here are the biggest engineering firms in the Austin-area
The 2026 list of engineering firms is ranked by engineering billings for the Austin office. Billings include projects in various stages from planning to completion, a cycle that often spans multiple years. Data is gathered from ABJ surveys. The Austin area includes Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell counties. The top 39 firms reported more than $1.3 billion in Austin-area engineering billings in 2025. Collectively, these firms employed 1,463 engineers locally. This online ranking expands beyond print, adding 19 engineering companies to the 20 featured in this week’s print edition. Austin’s largest engineering firms saw mixed results in 2025, with top-ranked HDR Engineering widening its lead over competitors. The firm reported $203 million in local engineering billings, up from $145 million the previous year. Growth was strong among most of the top five firms, led by gains at Kimley-Horn and HNTB Corp., though No. 2 AECOM reported a 13.4% decline. The gap between No. 1 and the rest of the field remains substantial, with HDR generating more than double the billings of the No. 5 firm, signaling continued dominance at the top. This week’s List continues a shift in our research methodology and philosophy, one that emphasizes more data and context for readers while better coordinating the resources available to us and our 40-plus sister publications under the American City Business Journals flag. This effort identified thousands of new local records — and cumulatively, tens of thousands of new businesses across ACBJ’s footprint — last year alone. Information on the List was obtained through Austin Business Journal research or supplied by individual firms through questionnaires that ABJ could not independently verify. In case of ties, firms are ranked by companywide billings. Additionally, engineering firms that did not respond to surveys but appear on the List are ranked based on ABJ research. Employment estimates are derived from firm websites, submissions to affiliated Business Journal publications, ABJ archives, U.S. Department of Labor filings and other firm-specific resources.
